Firefox 3, Pros and Cons

June 17th, 2008

Firefox has released its long awaited upgrade, but there are so many people hitting the site that it is down. Once you get your copy, I would love to hear your pros and cons.

My biggest concern is that I am going to have to modify style sheets for all the websites I have written in the past. Clients, feel free to contact me if you find issues on your site and I will help you fix them.

Pros

  • Faster page rendering because of the Gekko 1.9 engine
  • Enhanced Security including Malware and Phishing protection, Instant Web site ID, support for the Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer
  • New bookmark and browser history tools
  • Uses less system resources
  • Smooth scrolling of open browser tabs
  • It passes the Acid2 test
  • Smart Location Bar that search bookmarks and history as you type a url

Cons

  • Your delicious add-on will be removed
  • Not supported on all operating systems

Firefox 3.1 is supposed to release in July 2008 with even more enhancements that include tab previews and autocomplete for tagging bookmarks.

WordPress 2.5 Sneak Peek

March 18th, 2008

Some notes and screen shots were just released about the new WordPress 2.5 features and dashboard. I am so glad to see that Matt is working with a team like Happy Cog to take WordPress to the next level.

I am planning my next site redesign based off the 2.5 features.

Grid Computing tackles projects that benefit humanity including Human Proteome Folding and Help Conquer Cancer

December 18th, 2007

I want to encourage the web development and social media community, especially in Houston, to put their computers to work and setup the world community grid on their computers. The application runs in the background of your computer and analyzes data packets that will eventually help to benefit humanity. When you need your computer’s full power, the application automatically stops using your processing power so that you do not sacrifice your work quality.

Please join the Houston Social Media and Web Dev Community once you setup your account and let’s show the world how much we care.

RubberDuck Software’s PromoteIt ripped off SimpleBits Website Design

December 13th, 2007

promoteit.gifJake Marsh ripped off the design of Dan Cederholm’s Simplebits.com for his RubberDuck Software website. How can someone feel good about themselves when they do something like this?

Something similar happened in March of this past year when LogoMaid ripped off a version of the Simplebits logo.

When linking to a ripped off site, put rel=”nofollow” in the “a” tag to keep their pagerank from growing.

After about 10 minutes of this post being up, the RubberDuck Software site went offline. Hmmm…is that coincidence? Someone must be in communication with DreamHost to take it offline.
